I have been in all of those scenarios and my years of career I have found great answers and inspiration from great authors worth reading. This is why I wanted to suggest some reading for those starting a UX career or owning a website and would like to improve it.

8. The Pocket Universal Principles of UX: 100 Timeless Strategies to Create Positive Interactions between People and Technology by Irene Pereyra
9. The Design of Everyday Things: Revised and Expanded Edition by Don Norman
10. 100 MORE Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People by Susan Weinschenk
Regardless of whether some of these suggestions are classics (a.k.a. a bit old) a lot of their content is still very valid.
